Individual fear, memory, fixation, or psychic fracture can determine the manifestation's form.

Holumns
Holumn is a category of manifestation, not a biological species. Fear, memory, fixation, trauma, and psychic fracture can press into reality as a creature, a natural phenomenon, a repeating event, a disembodied will, or a curse.

Definition
Nature and behavior
Some Holumns have bodies. Others persist as events, conditions, or disembodied wills.
A physical creature may be fought as a body, but another Holumn may exist as weather, repetition, a command without a speaker, or a condition attached to an object or place.
The pressure of a population or place can also acquire an outward form.
The result can injure, alter, pursue, remove, or kill even when it has no stable body.
Each manifestation follows the specific wound or pressure from which it emerged.
Observed forms
Known forms
Embodied
A creature or body that occupies physical space, including forms that move without being alive.
Environmental
Weather, water, terrain, or another natural system becomes the body or behavior of the manifestation.
Event-bound
The Holumn exists as a sequence, compulsion, rule, or occurrence with no creature that can be confronted directly.

Disembodied
A voice, memory, desire, or will acquires agency without a stable body of its own.
Incident evidence: HI-001
Curse-bound
A person, object, place, or action carries a hostile rule that persists until its particular condition is interrupted.

Formation
Formation
- 01INNER SOURCEFear, memory, fixation, trauma
Psychic pressure accumulates in a person, population, or place.
- 02STRUCTUREA private logic takes shape
The pressure acquires conditions, repetition, imagery, and intent.
- 03BREACHThe inner condition crosses outward
What belonged to psyche or memory begins acting upon shared reality.
- 04MANIFESTATIONThe world must obey the new rule
The result follows its particular conditions. Those conditions must be understood before any intervention can be trusted.

The Voice on the Line
The calls become incessant. The voice stops merely repeating the witness and begins speaking independently.
No countermeasure is confirmed.
Read the incident record → HI-002 · Event-bound / Curse-boundThe Last Piece
A puzzle purchased at a market compels its owner to finish it. When the final piece is placed, the owner disappears and enters the missing-persons archive.
No countermeasure is confirmed. Refusing completion appears safer than solving the object, but the strength and transfer of the compulsion remain unknown.

A pale girl rises from the river with her eyes sewn shut by fishing line and a dress made from dead fish. She enslaves the souls of people drowned in the river and uses their hands to pull new victims beneath the surface.
Lynleit's blue flame burns the submerged hands. Once the surface supports her, the hands beneath her cannot reach through it. This is an observed boundary around her escape, not a proven restriction across the entire river. No method of freeing the enslaved dead or defeating the girl is confirmed.

Something immense moves beneath the city river despite stretches too shallow to contain it. Impossible waves damage boats and kayaks, while drowned bodies lose pieces to bites larger than any expected river predator could make.
No countermeasure is confirmed. Its dependence on the river may be a boundary, but it is not yet known whether the water contains the Holumn or belongs to it.

A lost visitor may enter a deserted old street whose lanes, stairs, courtyards, and hills cannot be reconciled with the surrounding city. Following anyone encountered there may prevent the visitor from returning to ordinary streets.
The urban warning instructs visitors not to follow anyone encountered on the street. It is not known whether refusing the lure guarantees escape or why Lynleit returns after following it.

A Holumn transfers its own terminal condition to whoever consciously destroys it. When Lynleit and Kyrien kill it together, one fatal curse identifies both egos as a single causal answer and remains distributed across them.
The curse recognizes the egos responsible for the Holumn's destruction. The advisers identify the death of either subject as a way to release the survivor. Lynleit and Kyrien instead undergo enough reciprocal identity change to break its recognition. That outcome does not establish a reliable treatment for other subjects or curses.

Human figures hang roughly twenty to fifty metres above ground or water, heads lowered and limbs loose. Most of those Kyrien sees resemble men in trench coats and hats. Their faces are obscured by height and angle.
No weakness or countermeasure is known. Kyrien does not attempt to harm them.
Read the incident record → HI-008 · Event-bound / Curse-boundBone Archive
The Bone Archive preserves experiences that have no place in the surviving account of a person's life. They return through memory and the body: an unexplained scar, a familiar pain, or a practiced movement its owner never learned. An officer steps aside before a shot is fired and later discovers a scar where the bullet would have entered.
No countermeasure is known. The Archive cannot be relied on to undo events or predict the future. How its experiences are accessed, selected, repeated, or escaped is unknown.
Read the incident record → HI-009 · Event-boundThe Oneiric Confluence
Sleepers remember encounters in a common dream environment. Their personalities remain recognizable while ordinary inhibition and the ability to refuse weaken.
Naming and recognizing a pressure can sometimes restore a gap between impulse and action. This neither ends the dream nor guarantees safety or lasting control.
Read the incident record → HI-010 · Event-boundThere Is No Eleventh Floor
An office worker enters an elevator in a ten-floor building and encounters impossible floors, repeated rooms and luring voices. Lynleit brings him back; six minutes have elapsed on the office clock.
Physical continuity and repeated tests offer temporary guidance. Waiting rather than choosing another route precedes an elevator's appearance. Neither this escape nor the painted boundary is established as universally reliable, and the Holumn is not shown destroyed.

Limits and countermeasures
Responses depend on the manifestation
Ordinary weapons may affect some physical bodies, but they cannot solve a manifestation whose essential rule is environmental, conditional, or disembodied.
- 01Identify the rule
The visible threat may be only one effect of the governing rule.
- 02Find its boundary
Trigger, place, object, memory, or repeated action may define what the Holumn can do.
- 03Match the intervention
Some Holumns can be harmed physically. Others require magecraft capable of acting on the condition itself.
Systemic breach
The Spill turns manifestation into an environment
His identity and significance remain concealed for most of the story. The disappearances that follow are caused by Holumns.
- 01One person disappears and is treated as the first victim.
- 02Searchers, investigators, and police enter the same widening absence.
- 03The park remains quarantined after the initial crisis.
- 04The Spill survives the political crisis and becomes MSF's permanent mandate.
Certain incidents produce unusually dense or extensive fog and mist, particularly in Vilen's park and along the river. Ordinary Narvean fog also occurs. A loss of visibility does not by itself identify a Holumn. The mist's source and mechanism are not known for every incident.

Lester carries the boundary inside himself
A person who is also part Holumn
Lester retains human agency and acts as Natalia's trusted ally. His part-Holumn nature sometimes permits interventions that ordinary investigation and conventional magecraft cannot achieve. His chronology cannot be reconciled into a continuous causal biography. Neither he nor Natalia knows his origin; it lies beyond the horizon of human singularity and ordinary human comprehension. Natalia recognizes contradiction as intrinsic to nature, without reducing Lester to an explainable transformation or an error in reality.
Victims and continuity
Being taken and returning
Being taken means entering a state imposed by a particular Holumn.
The effect need not involve travel. Location, chronology, physical continuity, identity, life, death, and causality may cease to function normally.
A victim can return. What makes return possible, and whether the same person returns, depend on the Holumn responsible.
Read the archive boundaries and evidence →Death is one possible result. Others include madness, contradiction, disrupted time, altered reality, compromised physicality, and damaged or transformed memory.
Holumn activity can resemble life after death or reanimate a corpse. Reanimation does not necessarily restore the original person or constitute ordinary resurrection.
Reappearance alone does not establish unchanged identity. Each Holumn determines the implications for memory, continuity, and personhood.
Jungian synchronicity suggests one possibility: meaningful coincidence could become an inhabitable or imprisoning condition rather than an observer's experience. This is an analogy, not a recorded manifestation.
